Polk Clerk and County Commissioners Earn Triple Crown Recognition for Finance Practices

Clerk and county team members pose in board room with awards.

Polk County Clerk of the Circuit Court & Comptroller Stacy Butterfield and the Polk County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) together earned the coveted Triple Crown Medallion from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA), the national authority on best practices in governmental accounting and financial reporting.

The coveted award is bestowed on communities that earn all three of GFOA’s annual awards.

 The three awards include:

  • An award for the 2020 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, a recognition that the Clerk’s office has earned for 41 consecutive years. This report is a detailed, spreadsheet-heavy report that contains the financials for the Clerk’s office, the BOCC, and the four other constitutional offices.
  • An award for the 2020 Popular Annual Financial Report. This is the 20th consecutive year the Clerk’s office has received this award. This is a condensed summary of the more detailed comprehensive report. While not required, the Clerk’s office produces this report to provide residents with a concise summary of how their county resources are used.
  • The Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the 2020-2021 Budget, an accomplishment that the BOCC has earned since 1990. This report serves as the BOCC’s spending policy, operations guide, financial plan, and communications tool.

“These awards are the highest form of recognition in government accounting, budgeting, and financial reporting,” Clerk Butterfield said. “Both are prestigious national awards that recognize conformance with the highest industry standards. It is an achievement to earn these awards, and it is a testament to the quality of work produced by the Clerk & Comptroller’s office, the Board’s budget team, and our external auditors from CliftonLarsonAllen. We remain committed to performing at the highest level of professionalism in our field.”

Todd Dantzler presented the awards to the Clerk and Commissioners at the June 21 board meeting. Dantzler is a former county commissioner and Managing Director & Senior Advisor of SVN Saunders Ralston Dantzler Real Estate.

“This is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon our team,” said Commissioner George Lindsey. “They know all of these things inside and out. It is a voluntary program, and a very high standard to meet. Very few communities can share this award. I thank the team that has worked so hard. Other communities don’t have the camaraderie and professionalism that our team has. I’m proud to be a part of it.”

The financial reports are available under the Public Funds menu on PolkCountyClerk.net and the County’s Budget report is available under the Government menu on Polk-County.net.
